Wheels and Tyres
Restoring a 1948 Swallow Gadabout
I decided to begin my journey into the world of the scooter with the Gadabout's very rusty eight-inch wheels. The front wheel was fitted with a 4.00-8 India Industrial tyre and the rear with an ancient 4.00-8 Dunlop ribbed tyre.
8-inch pressed steel wheels with split rims fixed on with six 5/16" BSF nuts. Wheels sand blasted primed and painted silver-grey rather than the original black.
At the front and rear two deep-groove RL-S4 ball bearings carry each wheel on a 1/2" diameter steel axle.
5" x 3/4" brakes.
Roller chain 1/2" x 3/16" (No.420) with a 24-tooth rear sprocket. The extremely worn sprocket was replaced by one machined from a Tbot sprocket. A couple of 4.00-8 King Tyres and fitted with TR87 inner tubes will complete the first task.
