SPEEDOMETER

Smiths Chronometric Speedometer
The unusual D shaped unit, made by Smiths motor accessories, was used on the Gadabout and was also fitted to many other motorcycles and scooters including the BSA Bantam, James and some Vespas. It was offered in 55, 65 and 70mph versions, either clockwise or anti-clockwise cable drive and rated at 1000 or 1600 revolutions per mile. The Gadabout used the 55mph 1000 revs per mile which was mounted on the handlebars. The dial was illuminated by a 6V 3W bulb held in a spring loaded union screwed into the base of the speedometer housing. This was threaded 5/8in x 26 BSC. The speedometer mounting studs were standard 6mm.
